Yurts

About the Yurt
The Yurt is a round tent used by the nomads of Mongolia (Russia), where it is called a 'ger'.
Wind proof, easy to put up and transport, the ger is superbly adapted to nomadic ways. Its wall consists
of wooden lattice fences which, when spread open and tied together form a stable circle. The roof of the
traditional ger is made of poles attached to a wheel at the apex with a hole to vent the smoke. Felt
pads, lashed over an inner layer of cloth, are covered with white canvas to provide insulation and
rain protection. A Yak-dung stove fired up inside the ger made life normally quite comfortable in the
desert of Mongolia.(above picture: traditional Yurt in a museum in Bremen,Germany
The LABIS YURTS are adapted to our climated of Canada and Northern US
where we deal with rain and snow. The pitch of the roof is steeper,
we don't leave a hole in the roof for the smoke (rather
make it for a closed fire, ie. stove with the pipe extending out of
the wall) and the frame is made of #1 kiln dried fir, which is light,
strong and easily collapsible and the rafters are notched and fit snuggly
into a cable that lies on top of the lattice wall. The canvas I use
is highly mildew and water-resistant and there are choices of going
with the 10.35 oz, the 13oz or the synthetic breathable fabrics. These
Yurts come with a complete liner, ie double wall and roof (added feature
of the Labis Moon Yurts) which are hung on the inside. This is used
in the winter and the added air space gives extra warmth. You may add
insulation between the walls (like Reflectix) depending on your climate.
In this case you could also place the liners on the outside of the frame,
so you see the actual frame. Of course it is best for your yurt to be
lived in the winter if you keep it up. It is very easy to dismantle,
should you not wish to use it through heavy rain or snow season.

more information on the frame
The entire frame is made of clear douglas fir or larch. The walls of 1x2's and the rafters are 2x4's.
They are protected with linseed oil. The queen pin (centre piece where the rafters join) is made in the
regular yurt of solid wood into which the rafters are notched. It is all solidified by wedges. Queen pin is painted.
Another type of roof frame is with lodgepole pine rounds (rafters) joining the queen pin which is open in the middle.
Here you could add a dome skylight.
The lattice frame (wall)is tied together with bolts. The door frame is made of
cedar and comes with a wooden framed door covered with canvas. The door frame is made to hang solid
doors as well.
The Labis Yurts are custom made, meaning you
will decide where you want your stove, and how you like windows
and where. I will gladly help and support you in your decision making
process. I can also advise you on your floorplan, choice of stoves,
insulation, etc.
